Brandon’s Law is on Governor’s desk

The Ohio House and Senate have passed “Brandon’s Law” which allows for increased criminal penalties for people who flee accident scenes that cause death or serious injury. The law is in memory of a Guernsey County teenager who was killed by a hit-and-run driver three years ago.
The driver in the case later admitted consuming alcohol and smoking marijuana, but because he was not caught the night of the accident, his intoxication levels could not be obtained, and he received a lessor sentence than would otherwise have been allowed.
Brandon’s Law would increase the penalties for those to crimes to fourth- and second-degree felonies, respectively, provided perpetrators leave accidents scene knowing they have seriously hurt or killed another. The bill is on the Governor’s desk for his signature.
