Vera L. Berthold, 90 years, of West Unity, passed away Monday, September 5, 2016 at Hillside Country Living, where she was a resident. Vera was born November 28, 1925 in Pleasant Bend, Ohio, the daughter of the late Frank and Ella May (Koenig) Collett. Vera was a 1943 graduate of Holgate High School. She married Joseph C. Berthold on October 16, 1948, and he preceded her in death on June 30, 2006. Vera worked for Four County Joint Vocational School in the cafeteria. She was an active member of the West Unity United Methodist Church, where she helped manage the food pantry and also assisted in the preparation of funeral luncheons. She also participated in the West Unity Senior Center where she played many card games. Vera was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan as well as a stout Hilltop Cadet fan. She also enjoyed going to the casino on occasion. She had a great sense of humor and found a sense of satisfaction in mowing her lawn. Vera thoroughly found pleasure in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving is her son, Michael (Sarah) Berthold of Adrian, Michigan; two grandchildren, Jason (Danielle) Berthold of San Francisco, California and Jana (Mark) Schutte of Adrian, Michigan; three great-grandchildren, Ace Berthold, Megan and Joey Schutte; one niece, Cindy (Jerry) Oberhaus; two nephews, Anthony Schwab and Jim Schwab. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph and three sisters, Imo Collett, Marceil Altman and Mary Lou Schwab.
Visitation for Vera L. Berthold will be held on Friday, September 9, 2016 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 202 North Liberty Street, West Unity. A Celebration of Life service for Vera will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2016 in the West Unity United Methodist Church, 311 North Liberty Street, West Unity. Private interment will take place prior to her Celebration of Life Service in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, Ohio.
