Eugene Grant Vanderbunt, 88

Eugene Grant Vanderbunt, age 88, of Wauseon passed away on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. Prior to his retirement he had been worked in the restaurant Ev’s Place, which he later purchased and became Gene’s Place. He had also worked as a herdsman for 10 years. Gene had been involved in many things in Wauseon. He did a lot of building and remodeling in Wauseon, coached and umpired Little League, he was also active with the Latin American League Baseball, he umpired Girls’ Softball, for 10 years he refereed high school wrestling, and was active with Boy Scout Troop 8. Gene also served eight years on Wauseon City Council and 13 years as a Deputy Sherriff for Fulton County.

Gene was born in Binghamton, NY on May 28, 1928, the son of Grant and Bessie (Wood) Delgado. In 1947 he married Evelyn Grace Stafford, and she preceded him in death in 1979. In 1980 he married Irene Bernicke, and she preceded him in death in 2006. He was a member of the First Church of God in Wauseon. Gene enjoyed working with his model trains.

Surviving are two sons; Wes David (Nancy) Vanderbunt of Edgewater, Florida and Bruce Kirby (Debby) Vanderbunt of Oxford, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Adam (Jenny) Vanderbunt, Tucker (Marla) Vanderbunt, Molly (Kerry) Hodges, Dustin Vanderbunt, Joleen Taylor, Raymond Vanderbunt, Marissa VanFredric; seven step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchidlren; and one sister, Nancy Jo of Leesburg, Florida. He was preceded in death by wife, Evelyn and wife, Irene; parents; sister, Sara Ayers; son Raymond Vanderbunt; and grandson, Derek Vanderbunt.

A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the First Church of God, with Pastor Paul Flores, officiating. A funeral luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be given to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.grisierfh.com.
