The Village of Pioneer has joined in the chorus of villages and cities that oppose the centralized collection of income taxes. Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s two-year budget proposal would require businesses to file about $600 million of municipal income taxes through the online Ohio Business Gateway, according to a Columbus Dispatch report. The Ohio Department of Taxation would process and distribute the returns and charge a 1 percent fee for the service. April McMillen, Pioneer’s fiscal officer, stated what the state wants to do is do centralized collections for all business returns that are already collected at the village as income tax. She added it would take more time for villages like Pioneer to get their income tax returns and there would also be less money because of the state’s fee. The village council, therefore, passed a resolution in opposition to the proposal.
