Dr. Yoshinori “Joe” Tokunaga, 85 years, of Bryan passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay. Dr. Joe Tokunaga was born March 30, 1932 in Kumamoto City, Japan. He was a graduate of Kumamoto Medical School. Dr. Joe Tokunaga began his career as a surgeon in Japan. He moved to Bryan and began working for Community Hospitals and Wellness Center, Bryan Hospital, as the Director of Pathology in September 1982 and retired in July 2009. He married Yuko Mary Kihara on March 24, 1963 in Japan, and she preceded him in death on January 24, 2005. Dr. Joe Tokunaga was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bryan, and the International Friendship Club. Practicing medicine was his true passion in life and he considered it his hobby. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and walking.
Surviving are his two daughters, Masami (Kevin) Maggard of Naperville, Illinois and Claire (Rob) Hughes of Findlay, Ohio; four grandchildren, Ashley and Chloe Hughes of Findlay, Ohio, Austin Maggard with the Peace Corp in Africa and Alyssa Maggard of Chicago, Illinois, and one brother, Masanori Tokunaga of Kumamoto City, Japan. Dr. Joe Tokunaga was preceded in death by his wife, Yuko Mary, and one sister, Hiroko Tokunaga.
Funeral services for Dr. Yoshinori “Joe” Tokunaga will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in First Presbyterian Church, 506 Oxford Drive, Bryan with Pastor Barry Sweet officiating. Burial will follow in Fountain Grove Cemetery. Visitation for Dr. Joe Tokunaga will be at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home-Lynn Street Chapel, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan, Monday, April 2, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m.
