Roger D. and Catherine L. Schilt, 75 and 74 years, of West Unity, Ohio passed away Thursday, October 10, 2019 as a result of a motor vehicle accident near Van Wert, Ohio. Roger was born January 31, 1944 in Morenci, Michigan, the son of Donald and Eileen (Shaw) Schilt. Cathy was born December 7, 1944 in Montpelier, Ohio, the daughter of John and Helen (Tuttle) Houtz. Roger and Cathy were 1962 graduates of Montpelier High School. High school sweethearts, they were united in marriage on February 15, 1963. Roger was a lifelong farmer and a Vice President at National Bank of Montpelier. He previously owned and operated Tri-State Farm Equipment. Cathy worked at ConAgra Foods as the secretary to the Chief Executive Officer. She previously worked as a secretary at Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorneys Office. Roger and Cathy were members of West Unity United Methodist Church where they were very active. They both served on the board at the church. Cathy played the organ and sang in the church choir. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Roger enjoyed spending time outdoors and loved farming, camping, and exploring mountains. His backpacking trips to Colorado with his lifelong friend, Dave Wineland, were among his most treasure times. When he was not working, he could be found in his woodworking shop or cutting firewood. enjoyed visiting with others and never met a stranger. He was an extraordinarily talented storyteller; he had a story and a kind word for everyone he met.
Cathy had a passion for music and enjoyed sharing her talents with others. She performed as organist and pianist at her church for over 50 years. She cherished time spent with her family and adored her four grandchildren. She was always ready for a shopping trip even if it was merely to browse. Cathy and Roger made a point to spend time together and enjoyed each other’s companionship. They made many memories traveling and camping with their dogs.
Surviving are their two children, Sandra Haas of Novi, Michigan and Raymond Schilt of Bryan, Ohio; four grandchildren, Hannah Haas of Novi, Michigan, Erika Haas of Novi, Michigan, Jeremiah Schilt of Bryan, Ohio and Madison Hall Schilt of Bryan, Ohio. They are also survived by their mothers, Eileen Schilt of West Unity and Helen Tuttle of Denver, Colorado; Roger’s sister, Shirley Wineland (Ralph) McCartney of Mesa, Arizona; Cathy’s brothers, Steven (Lynn) Houtz of Omaha, Nebraska and Phillip (Nancy) Houtz of Denver, Colorado. Roger and Cathy were preceded in death by their fathers, Donald Schilt and John Houtz, and Cathy’s brother, Daniel Houtz.
Visitation for Roger and Cathy Schilt will be held Monday, October 14, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at West Unity United Methodist Church, 311 North Liberty Street, West Unity. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Pastor Greg Coleman officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Grove Cemetery, West Unity. Arrangements by Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 202 North Liberty Street, West Unity.
