Anna Margaret Shininger, 95 years, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance. Anna was born on December 28, 1917 in Ney, Ohio, the daughter of the late Peter and Susan (Warnimont) Hesselschwardt. She was a 1935 graduate of Ney High School. Anna married Howard Shininger on October 14, 1939, and he preceded her in death on September 16, 1993. Anna worked as a tomato peeler and checker at the Lutz Tomato Processing Plant. She also worked as a hostess at the Colonial Coin Laundromat. She was a member of St. Isidore Parish Catholic Church, both Delaware Bend and Marysdale. Anna taught religious education at The Bend. She was a Eucharistic Minister and church cleaner as well as counting and recording collections and DDF monies for over 30 years. She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society of both churches and was a life member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. Anna enjoyed traveling and she and her husband made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. She also visited Switzerland’s ski resorts. She was a prolific knitter and also crocheted many heirloom-quality gifts, which are treasured by her children and grandchildren. She also used her creative skills to make baby blankets, which she donated to the Community Women’s Resources for the newborns of single mothers.
She is survived by her children, Sue (John) Holcombe of Taos, New Mexico, Joe (Doris) Shininger of Middlefield, Ohio, Mary France
s “Franci” (Gerald) Zimmerman of Defiance, Tom (Gloria) Shininger of Sherwood and Andy (Penny) Shininger of Ney; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Shininger of Wabash, Indiana; 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Cecelia Steffel of Defiance. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Howard, one son, Peter L. Shininger, six brothers, Gilbert, George, Raymond, Charles, Bernard and Clarence “Joe” Hesselschwardt as well as four sisters, Rose Batt, Matilda Wallen, Cora Batt and Agnes Kunesh.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale, 6060 State Route 15, Ney, Ohio with Father Robert Kill and Father Anthony Batt officiating. Entombment will follow in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance. Visitation for Anna M. Shininger will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2013 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
