Charles VanderHorst, 91

Charles J. VanderHorst, Sr., age 91, of Alvordton, Ohio, died at 10:20 P.M. on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Evergreen Manor Care Center in Montpelier, Ohio, where he was a resident. Mr. VanderHorst attended Libby High School in Toledo, Ohio, and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He spent most of his life in the Toledo area and also spent a number of years in Titusville, Florida. While in Toledo he was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and in Titusville attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Charles was employed as a union bricklayer in the Toledo area for many years until his retirement due to a work-related disability. He was an accomplished artist and inventor, holding two U.S. patents, and was a member of the Holland, Ohio, American Legion.

Charles J. VanderHorst, Sr. was born on October 3, 1922, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Earl and Loretta (McEvoy) VanderHorst.

Survivors include his children, Charles (Patrecia) VanderHorst, Jr., of Alvordton, Paul (Barbara) Watkins, of Bryan, Ohio, Rosemary Borton and Jean (Ivan) Phillips, both of West Unity, Ohio; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Geraldine and Mary Lou. He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Watkins, one daughter, Linda Traxler, one grandson, Brian Tennant, one son-in-law, Chester Borton, five brothers and two sisters.

Service arrangements are pending with Krill Funeral Service, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan.

Memorials are requested to the Filling Home of Mercy in Napoleon, Ohio, in memory of Brian Tennant.
