Lowell R. “Bud” Bushong, 94, of Bryan passed away Wednesday morning at his home. He was born on June 14, 1919 in Madison Township, Ohio to E. Bert and Bertha J. (Fox) Bushong. Bud graduated from Pioneer High School in 1938. After high school he married Betty M. Caulkins, and she preceded him in death in February 2011. Bud proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, in the Battle of the Bulge and in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest.
Bud was a Madison Township farmer and owner of Bud’s Supermarket in Pioneer for 21 years, retiring in 1973. He then worked at Wilco Machine and Tool in Bryan for 11 years, retiring again in 1984. Bud was a lifetime member of the Pioneer American Legion.
Bud is survived by two daughters, Sandra (James) Rupp of Pioneer and Sharon (William) Burrows of Port Huron, Michigan; daughter in law Joyce Bushong of Calhoun, Georgia; nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, son Bill Bushong in April 2012 and one sister Doris Turrittin.
Visitation for Bud will be on Friday January 24th from 4-8pm at the Thompson Funeral Home in Pioneer. Services will be on Saturday at 11am at the funeral home with Max Munk to officiate. Interment will follow at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer with military rites provided by the Pioneer Veterans. Donations may be made to the Veterans Memorial Building or Williams County Cancer Assistance.
