Dr. Robert L. Ramus, 82

A long time Hicksville dentist, supporter of education and proud Ohio State Buckeye, Dr. Robert L. Ramus, 82, passed peacefully from this earth on January 8, 2025.  Robert (Bob or Doc) was born in Jewell OH in 1942 to H. Maxwell and E. Elaine (Winkler) Ramus. Bob Graduated from North Richland Adams (Jewell) High School in 1960, before continuing his studies at Ohio University in Athens, where he met his loving wife, Janet. They were the first couple married in the newly built First Presbyterian Church of Hicksville on December 27, 1964. They made their first home in Columbus where Bob attended Ohio State University and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1968. The couple then returned to Hicksville, where he began his 51-year career practicing dentistry. The couple had two daughters, Jennifer and Stephanie, with whom they shared their faith in Jesus Christ, their love of music, books, history, traveling and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Bob was a voracious reader and studier of the Bible. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hicksville where he served as Elder, Clerk, Auditor and Bible Study teacher. In 2017, he was a proud founding member of Hicksville Cornerstone Church.

Bob’s quest for knowledge and love of learning never stopped; a true lifelong learner. He was passionate about his profession and continued his education, earning first a Fellowship and then the Master designation in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD.) Bob was the first dentist in the state of Ohio to earn this designation. He served at all levels on the Ohio AGD Board. He was instrumental in developing the MasterTrack curriculum for AGD accreditation to help others further their education and prepare for their exams and his format is still widely used today.  He also served the National AGD board as a national trustee. Later, he served the Academy of Dentistry International Board of Regents on all levels, eventually serving 19 years as the Executive Director.  He spent countless hours volunteering for organizations or clubs. His favorite mission trip was with Thousand Smiles, an organization that travels to underprivileged countries performing dentistry and cleft palate surgeries. Bob was a member of or earned Fellowship in numerous dental and civic organizations.

Bob loved his small town, Northwest Ohio roots. He helped coach the Hicksville Connie Mack Baseball league and sang with the Northwesternaires Barbershop Chorus for a few years. He was a long-time member of the Hicksville Rotary Club, heading up the Annual pancake supper for 44 years. He was truly humbled to receive the Hicksville Rotary Citizen of the Year in 2010. Bob also served with the Hicksville Development Corporation, the First Federal Bank Advisory board and the Hicksville Rifle & Pistol Club. Other memberships included the National Rifle Association, OSU College of Dentistry Alumni and OSU Alumni Association to name a few.

In his later years, Bob enjoyed dining out, napping with their cats, Brutus, Mittens and Sampson, watching his grandsons play ball, following his beloved Yankees, reading spy novels, traveling to Florida (so he could complain about the heat), armchair quarterbacking and second guessing the Buckeye’s coach. He was always up for researching and discussing politics, religion, the next recruiting class, or the Buckeye’s bowl game prospects.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Janet (Bilger) Ramus. His daughters, Jennifer (David) Batiato and Stephanie (Tony) Wilhelm, grandchildren Bryson (Ali) Batiato, Peyton Batiato, Ethan (Caitlin) Wilhelm, Kyle Batiato, Gavin Wilhelm and Isaac Wilhelm; great-grandchildren Parker, Calvin, and Maddox. His brother, Bill (Eileen) Ramus, nephew Michael (Sarah) Ramus and niece Sarah (Charles) Bruorton and great nieces and nephews Emma, Liam, Callie and Aiden also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents Max and Elaine Ramus, and his in-laws Bob and Ruth Bilger.

In accordance with Robert’s wishes no public service will be held. A family celebration of life will be held privately. Arrangements are in care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville, Ohio 43526.
