As summer temperatures continue to rise, officials are urging parents and caregivers to take extra precautions against heat stroke, a silent and often fatal danger to young children left in hot vehicles. Every year, children across the country suffer serious injury or death after being left in cars that rapidly become ovens. According to safety experts, a car’s interior can rise by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, even with the windows cracked. On even a mild day, this can push interior temperatures well above 120°F, putting children at extreme risk.
