Hester C. Burkhardt, age 89, of Edon, Ohio, died at 9:17 P.M. on Monday, July 7, 2014, shortly after admittance to Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Montpelier, Ohio. Mrs. Burkhardt was a 1942 graduate of Montpelier High School and worked alongside her husband in the Burkhardt Grocery for many years and was also a toll taker with the Ohio Turnpike for six years. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Edon, the Mary Martha Circle, the Altar Guild, Eastern Star in Edon and the Edon American Legion Auxiliary. Hester was also an avid bridge player, loved to knit, sew and cook and was a great mother and grandmother.
Hester C. Burkhardt was born on December 15, 1924, in Hillsdale, Michigan, the daughter of S. Will and Alta Lucille (Price) Welch, Jr. She married John H. Burkhardt. Jr. on September 27, 1942, in Montpelier, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on November 24, 2006.
She is survived by one son, Paul (Beth) Burkhardt, of Edon; two granddaughters, Erin (Sgt. Austin) Bailey, with the U.S. Army in El Paso, Texas, and Lauren (Nathan) Hay, of Edon; and three great-grandchildren, Chase Bailey and Lexie and Riley Hay. She was also preceded in death by a brother, S. Will Welch, and two stepsisters, Mariam Welch and Helen Welch.
Services for Hester C. Burkhardt will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Peter Lutheran Church, in Edon, Ohio, with Reverend Roger Marlow officiating. Interment will be in Edon Cemetery. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home, 204 West Indiana Street, Edon, Ohio, from 2:00-8:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 10, 2014.
