Donald H. Black, age 89, of Wauseon and formerly of Swanton passed away Thursday at Fulton Manor in Wauseon. Prior to his retirement he had been a life long area carpenter. He had also developed the carpentry program at Penta County Vocational School where he taught for 12 years.
Mr. Black was born on Henry County, Ohio on September 10, 1924 the son of the late Harry and the late Ruby (Baldwin) Black. On February 19, 1944 he married the former Shirley Tanner and she survives. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He was also a member of the Swanton VFW, the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #349 in Wauseon, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Zenobia Shrine. Mr. Black loved to travel and had been to all 50 states, in recent years packing a tent and sleeping bags to travel to the last four remaining states.
Surviving are children; Kathie (Gib) Menough of Bowling Green, OH, Jeff (Connie) Black of Oklahoma City, OK, and Julie (Mick) Black of Swanton and “adopted” son Rick Ballmer of Maumee, OH. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, sister Barbara Jansen of Temperance, MI, and brother John Black of Lynchburg, VA. Preceding him in death were sons David and Robin.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00am Monday August 18, 2014 at the East Swanton Cemetery with Pastor Don Krieger officiating and the Fulton County Honor Guard providing military rites. Friends may call at the Edgar-Grisier Funeral Home in Wauseon from 2:00-5:00pm on Sunday where a Masonic Prayer service will be held at 5:00pm.
