John J. Gilbert, 90 years, of Bryan, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at his home with his family at his side. John was born February 9, 1924 in Bryan, Ohio the son of the late John and Edith (Calvin) Gilbert. John was an Army Veteran of WWII. He married Vivian M. Pendleton on October 21, 1961, in Bryan, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on June 30, 2003. John was a service technician for Ohio Gas Company for 22 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Bryan VFW Post 2489. John loved to be outdoors, whether hunting, fishing or playing golf, any day outside was a great day!
Surviving is his son, Daniel Gilbert of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; daughter, Virginia Camp of Alma, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Diane Gilbert of Montpelier; step-daughter, Susan Sims of Bryan; step-son, Robert (Janet) Sims of Bowen Island, British Columbia, Canada; step-daughter-in-law, Karen Sims of Bryan; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin Gilbert of Louisiana and one sister, Bonnie (Richard) Wolff of Montpelier. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, one son, Michael J. Gilbert, stepson, William Sims, two brothers, Morris and Marion Gilbert and one sister, Dorothy Snow.
Visitation for John J. Gilbert will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home-Greenisen Chapel, 225 East High Street, Bryan where funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Dee Custar officiating. Interment will follow in Ney Cemetery, Ney, Ohio with Military Graveside Services conducted by the Bryan VFW Post 2489.
