Wildlife continues recovering from Titan Tire oil spill

The animals who have survived the Titan Tire oil spill go home soon.

John Windau in the DNR’s Wildlife Communications Office says officials intend to release the first group of birds back into the wild on Thursday.

This release takes place at some spot on the Maumee River.

Windau says of the 500 ducks and geese taken into custody, 300 have died.

Lisa Smith from Tri-State Bird Rescue says cold temperatures explain the high mortality rate.

She says any birds who have lost feathers or have any other health issues remain in custody until they recover enough.

The investigation continues into the initial spill.
