Reverend Gilbert W. “Gil” Lewis, age 82, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 8:13 P.M. on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Bryan, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. Mr. Lewis served in the United States Army as a Sargent stationed in Korea during the Korean Conflict for fifteen months. He was employed by Tri-Wall in Butler, Indiana, for many years as a foreman and then by the Bryan City Schools as a printer and custodian until his retirement. As a man of faith, Gil and his wife, Rose, founded the The Prayer Chapel in Bryan in 1975, and he continued in the ministry until his final days. He was able to travel to twenty-two countries in his mission work and was always preaching the word of God as well as supporting missions and missionaries overseas. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Gilbert W. Lewis was born on August 28, 1932, in Davenport, Oklahoma, the son of Oscar and Lottie Belle (Wagley) Lewis. He married his wife of nearly 61 years, Rose Etta Hampton, on May 15, 1954, in San Jose, California, and she survives.
Survivors also include one son, Jeffrey (Nancy) Lewis , of Bryan; three grandchildren, Timothy (Theresa) Lewis, Andrew (Rebekah) Lewis and Melissa (Phillip) Fox; four great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; and his siblings, Esther Clint, of Fresno, California, Olan Lewis, of West Point, California, Mona, (Steve) Engel, of Delhi, California, Joe (Sandi) Lewis, of Vancouver, Washington, and Joyce Avalos, of Turlock, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, and six brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the Krill Funeral Home, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan. Services will follow at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan, officiated by the Lewis family. Private interment will follow in Shiffler Cemetery with grave side military rites conducted by Bryan VFW Post #2489 and the United States Army Honor Guard.
