Alfred West, Sr., 83 years, of Defiance, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the Laurels of Defiance, where he had been a resident. Alfred was born November 28, 1929 in Monroe, Michigan, the son of the late Monty C. and Clara (Partin) West. He was a 1947 graduate of Wauseon High School. He then entered the United State Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. He married Joann L. Andrist on February 14, 1969 in Defiance. Alfred was employed by General Motors – Powertrain for 26 years, retiring in 1986. He was a life member of the Defiance VFW Post 3360, Defiance Eagles Aerie 0372 and AMVETS Post 1991.
Surviving is his wife Joann L. of Defiance; six sons, Michael J. (Laura) Cocke of Defiance, Donald J. (Valarie) Cocke of Wauseon, Daniel G. (Tammy) Cocke of Versailles, Kentucky, Marty E. (Jodi) Cocke of Defiance, Michael A. (Jody) West of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Alfred West, Jr. of Defiance; six daughters, Denise L. (Deb Greer) DeTray of Defiance, Marcia L. Dietrich of Defiance, Sharon K. (Joe) Kelly of Defiance, Charlotte L. (Harold) Vickery of Sherwood, June (Roy) Miller of Salvisa, Kentucky and Janie (Michael) Castorina of Richmond, Kentucky; 35 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Cramer of Monroe, Michigan, Joanne West also of Monroe, Michigan and Hazel Jane Sheltnick of Bowling Green, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Tomilson.
There will be no visitation and the family will hold private services. Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan.
