Colonel (COL) Gerald E. Sack, 85

Colonel (COL) Gerald E. Sack, 85, of Bryan, Ohio, died on Monday, March 12, 2018, at 5:08 P.M. in Clearwater, Florida after a brief illness. COL Sack was affiliated with the United States Army for 38 years and received his Master’s Degree in Microbiology from the University of Toledo. While serving his country, COL Sack also owned and operated the Edgerton Pharmacy and Sack Hardware. Upon receiving his Colonel status, COL Sack retired from the Army in 1992, and went on to serve as a Postal Carrier for the USPS until his retirement in 1997.

COL Sack, was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 18, 1932, to Joseph Henry and Verna Lee (Casey) Sack. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1950. COL Sack pursued a degree in Microbiology at the University of Toledo. During his studies, he spent many years working alongside his father, Joseph Sack, at their family owned full-service gas stations. On September 6, 1958, he married the love of his life, Barbara Lee Clay. As a microbiologist in the Army, COL Sack was instrumental in finding a treatment and cure for ocular tuberculosis, which later was published in multiple medical journals. In addition, COL Sack was a consultant to the Surgeon General’s office in the field of Microbiology. COL Sack and his wife, Barbara, enjoyed spending the winters months in Seminole, Florida and the summer months at their lake cottage on Bird Lake in Osseo, Michigan. COL Sack was a member of the Williams County Fair Board for numerous years and he also spent much of his time attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, golfing, antiquing, and indulging in fine cuisine.

COL Sack is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their four children, Lori (Randy) Fisher of Bryan, Ohio; Amy (Frank) Thomas of Seminole, Florida; Jody (John) Shultz of Marysville, Ohio; Jim (Michele) Sack of Edgerton, Ohio. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, from 4:00-8:00 P.M. in the Krill Funeral Home, 114 East Hull Street, Edgerton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton, with Father Daniel Borgelt officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Edgerton, with grave side military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Memorials are requested to the Williams County Veterans Memorial or Community Hospitals & Wellness Center in Bryan.
