County Worker Killed In Defiance Accident

Accord­ing to a release from the Defi­ance County Sheriff’s Office, a Defi­ance County Envi­ron­men­tal Ser­vices employee was killed in an acci­dent dur­ing a trash drop-off Sat­ur­day morn­ing.

87-year-old Max Hook of Hicksville was attempt­ing to back a vehi­cle up to a dump­ster at the refuse pickup cen­ter on Gin­grich Road, when Hook’s vehi­cle lurched for­ward unex­pect­edly, hit­ting 58 year old envi­ron­men­tal ser­vices employee Peter Simo­nis of Defi­ance.

Simo­nis, accord­ing to the sheriff’s office, became pinned between Hook’s vehi­cle and a parked trailer. He was flown by ProMed­ica air ambu­lance to Parkview North Hos­pi­tal, Fort Wayne, Indi­ana, where he later died.

The inves­ti­ga­tion is con­tin­u­ing today.
