Edgar M. Hesselschwardt, 91

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Edgar M. Hesselschwardt, who peacefully departed this life on September 7, 2024, at Parkview Bryan Hospital. Born in Defiance, OH, on October 26, 1932, Edgar lived a full and dynamic life marked by love, laughter, and dedication.

Edgar was the beloved son of the late Bernard A. and Lillian G. (Grine) Hesselschwardt. He was a proud graduate of Defiance High School (Class of 1950) and furthered his education at Defiance College. Answering the call to serve his country, Edgar bravely served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.

Following his military service, Edgar built a respectable career, retiring from the lab at B.F. Goodrich. His professional endeavors were matched by his commitment to community and camaraderie as a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2556, and the American Legion Post 223. He was also a founding member of the “Stub Club.”

Edgar first married Gwendolyn Kreg on October 8, 1955, and after her passing, to Maxine Slaughter on February 8, 1986. He found love once more with Mary Slattery, with whom he shared many joyous years until his passing.

Preceded in death by his wives Gwendolyn Kreg and Maxine Slaughter, his parents, brothers Marvin and Hubert Hesselschwardt, sister Junella Coolman, brothers-in-law Gilbert Coolman and Forrest James Lutz, sisters-in-law Geraldine Gutman and Hildonna Hesselschwardt, and two nieces and a nephew.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Mary Slattery. He is also survived by his children Kathy (Dan) West of Boynton Beach, FL; Kreg Hesselschwardt of Hicksville, OH; and Lisa Bryant of Hicksville, OH. His stepchildren, Terry (Lori) Slattery of Kent, OH; Tony (Sheila) Slattery of Hicksville, OH; Beth (Joe) Cybulski of Geneva, OH; Jenny (Brian) Slattery-Zoretich; and Katy (Steve) Maistros of Cleveland, OH, who also mourn his loss.

Edgar was a deeply cherished grandfather to Kayla (Greg) Amstutz, Matthew West, and Hayley (Austin) Michael. He was a loving step-grandfather to Emily and Renee Slattery, Rebecca, Sarah and John Cybulski, Joe, Marin and Maya Zoretich, Sam, Eli, and Nick Maistros; three great-grandchildren, Gavin and Garrett Amstutz and Everett Michael. Also survived by his sisters Jean Lutz of Edon, OH and Monica Hearne of Defiance, OH.

An avid Ohio State, Cleveland Browns, and Guardians fan, Edgar enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and visiting casinos. Known for his humor, he loved to joke and make people laugh. Edgar enjoyed dining out, going to horse races, bowling, playing cards and Farkle with friends. His interests also included attending family events, theater, and traveling.

Visitation for Edgar M. Hesselschwardt will be held Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Visitation will continue at St. Michael Catholic Church, 100 Antwerp Drive, Hicksville on Friday, September 13, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by his funeral mass on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM with Father Daniel Borgelt officiating. Interment will follow in Six Corners Cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites accorded by a combined Honor Guard from the Hicksville American Legion Post 223, Sherwood VFW Post 5665, and the Farmer American Legion Post 131.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Health Professionals Hospice, St. Michael Catholic Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and aides at Vancrest Hicksville for their incredible care and to the ER and ICU staff at Parkview Bryan Hospital for their wonderful support. Also, to Dr. Bleck D.O. for his special care.

Edgar will be remembered for his warmth, wit, and unwavering love for his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of joy and laughter, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
