Environmental director says efforts can help reduce algal blooms.

An environmental program director at The Ohio State University said farmers’ efforts can help reduce algal blooms in Lake Erie. Dr. Chris Winslow directs the Ohio Sea Grant Program and coordinates education and outreach for OSU’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island, located in the middle of the Western Lake Erie Basin. He presented on the topic at Corn-Soybean Day in Archbold.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, excess amounts of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen can contribute to algal blooms, with weather and temperature also playing factors.
