Gregory Allen Abate, 64

Gregory Allen Abate, 64 years, of Bryan, passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at his home. Greg was born on December 14, 1952 in St. Joseph, Michigan, the third child of Carl and Phyllis (Potts) Abate. He spent his youth playing baseball and basketball. In the summer of 1964, Greg and the family moved from Michigan to Bryan, Ohio, where he was both active in Junior High football and basketball. When not involved in sports, he was involved with music, as the lead singer and keyboardist for a junior high “rock” band, called the “Lost Generation.” Later in high school, he kept busy playing the trumpet. Greg will always be remembered for being the smart one of the family. He would have graduated with the BHS class of 1971, but he finished his high school years in Tucson, Arizona. But more importantly, he will be remembered as both the big and baby brother, the father, the uncle, the cousin and the beloved grandfather. He loved his grandchildren and loved to volunteer his time running the food pantry at New Life Worship Center. He was Sarah’s “Rock” all throughout her life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Phyllis Abate. He leaves behind a daughter, Sarah Abate of Bryan; two sons, Elton (Jenn) Robinett of Cape Coral, Florida and Andy Robinett of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Madison, Gretchen, Mackenzie, Hannah and Noah; two sisters, Susan (Frank) Psurny of Leesburg, Florida and Catherine Abate of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one brother, Michael Abate, also of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Nieces and nephews, Frank Psurny III, Tamara Psurny, Krista Abate, Cori and Claire Spencer Abate, Megan Abate as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Our father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend will be missed by all of us who still call this earth our home.

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Sunday, February 19, 2017 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at New Life Worship Center, 14451 County Road C. Bryan, followed by a celebration of Greg’s life beginning at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in the church, with Pastor Jeff Miller officiating. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall. Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home-Greensien Chapel, 225 East High Street, Bryan.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions be made to the family to assist with expenses.
