He Quit!

A man who has spent decades as a law enforcement officer in Defiance County is calling it quits.

The Crescent News reports that Gene Laney, who turns 70 years old today, says he’s retireing.

Laney was once Hicksville’s police chief. In recent years, he has worked as a Defiance County Sheriff’s deputy on court security detail, in charge of overseeing Defiance Municipal Court’s holding cells. After more than 35 years, Friday was Laney’s last day.

He began his career in 1978 as a Hicksville village patrolman.
