James A. Gype, 91, of Wauseon passed away early Wednesday July 5, 2017 at the Defiance Area Hospice Inpatient Care Center. Prior to his retirement he had owned and operated along with his brother and father the former Gype Motors Sales in Wauseon. He had also worked in sales for the former Wagner Motors in Wauseon, drove truck for R.V. Whitmer Propane and worked in carpentry for Ben Rupp.
Mr. Gype was born on June 22, 1926 in Fulton County, Ohio the son of the late John “Al” and the late Loretta (Robinson) Gype. On March 21, 1948 he married the former Mary Thierry and she survives. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII and had been active in volunteer work with the Wauseon Fire Department, the Wauseon VFW and the Wauseon American Legion. In 2007 he was inducted in the Wauseon High School Athletic Hall of Fame for football and basketball. He spent 50 years running the chains for the WHS football team.
Surviving besides his wife Mary are children; Jeff (Phyllis) Gype of Columbus, Jana (Perry) Rupp of Wauseon, grandchildren; Erin (John), Daniel (Sara) and Andrew (Jeanette) and two great-grandchildren and one on the way. Also surviving is sister; Aletta Dielman. Preceding him in death besides his parents were brothers; Robert and Joe.
Visitation will be held from 2:00-6:00pm on Saturday July 8, 2017 at the Edgar-Grisier Funeral Home in Wauseon. Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in the Wauseon Union Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Defiance Area Inpatient Care Center, the Wauseon American Legion or the Fulton County Historical Society.
