Joan M. Coon, 81, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in her residence with her family by her side.  Joan was born July 15, 1942, in Hicksville, the daughter of the late Ralph C. and Margaret (Elliott) Battershell.  She was a 1961 graduate of Hicksville High School.  Joan married Dale E. Coon on October 26, 1973, at the Hicksville First Church of Christ, and he preceded her in death on November 5, 2012.  She retired in 2013 after working as a home care giver for Innovative Support Service.  Joan previously operated a home for the mentally ill in Antwerp, Ohio, and ran EMS with the Hicksville Fire Department for six years.  In her younger years, Joan enjoyed camping with her husband Dale, and in later years kept busy with her grandchildren, which were her top priority.

Joan is survived by her four children, Doug (Sherry) Corwin of Defiance, Ohio, Tim Coon of Hicksville, Ohio; Michelle (Darryl) Coon Cooper of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Steven Coon of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two adopted daughters, Cathy (Jay) Gloor of Hicksville, and Lori (Mike) Deem of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 39 years, Dale; a daughter, Janice L. Sweet; and by her Aunt Dot.

Visitation for Joan M. Coon will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 10:30 A.M. – 12:00 Noon at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville, Ohio 43526.  A Memorial Service for Joan will immediately follow in the funeral home beginning at 12:00 Noon with Pastor Brad North officiating.  Interment will follow in Six Corners Cemetery, Hicksville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the Hicksville Volunteer Firemen’s Association, 117 South Main Street, Hicksville, OH 43526, or to South Scipio United Brethren Church, 24990 Antwerp Road, Harlan, Indiana 46743.
