Laverne Born, 97

Laverne G. Born, age 97 years, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio and Englewood, Florida, passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 at Mercy Hospital of Defiance, Defiance, Ohio.  Laverne was born August 7, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Michael and Katherine (Buday) Fenyik.  She was a 1935 graduate of Garfield High School, Garfield Heights, Ohio.  She married Thomas William Born Sr. on December 24, 1939 in Lakewood, Ohio, and he preceded her in death in March of 1985.  Laverne was a homemaker, caring for her family.  She worked during the holiday season at the former Higbee’s Department Store in Cleveland.  Laverne spent over 30 years residing in Florida where she was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Englewood.  She was a member of Triune Lutheran Church in Broadview Heights, Ohio.  Laverne was a member of the Sweet Adelines singing group.  She participated in the Mothersingers group.  She was a Cub Scout Den Leader of Pack 180.  She
taught Sunday School and volunteered as a Fund Raiser for the Red Cross.

Surviving are her two sons, Thomas W. (Evelyn) Born, Jr. of Sherwood and Roland (Helen) Born of Lexington, Kentucky; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband and four sisters, Margaret Carbonneau, Oddie Neff, Katie Robinson, and Helen Lehecka.
