Madonna Jane Wonderly, 93 years, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance, surrounded by her loving family after a very brief illness. She was born in Paulding, Ohio, on June 27, 1929, the youngest child of Albert and Mary Ann (Koenn) Wilhelm. She married Kenneth F. “Dutch” Wonderly on October 20, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Paulding, Ohio. Together they raised five children. Dutch preceded her in death on July 13, 2016, just shy of their 60th Anniversary.
Donna was a very loyal farmer’s wife who always did the next task at hand without complaint. She was a devout member of St. Isidore Catholic Church always lending a hand wherever it was needed. She was an active member of the Altar Rosary Society. In her spare time she volunteered for the American Red Cross Society – personally donating almost 18 gallons of life saving blood – a fact she was very proud of. All of this while still maintaining her large vegetable garden.
Donna was a 1947 graduate of Paulding High School where she played on the basketball team. She also played cymbals in the school band – admitting that she never knew how to read music. She was very proud of her family and was extremely involved in her grandchildren’s lives. She especially enjoyed her weekly family card nights and attending their numerous sporting events over the years. She enjoyed her weekly euchre games with her pals at the Paulding County Senior Center.
She will be deeply missed by her five children – Albert (Kelly) Wonderly, Carol (Brian) Keegan, Chuck (Marsha) Wonderly, Daniel (Tanya) Wonderly, and Mary (Jason) Wermer; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Marvelle Wilhelm of Paulding; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Donna was also preceded in death by her parents; her four brothers, Louis (Rae Deane) Wilhelm, Paul (Lela) Wilhelm, Theodore (Nellie) Wilhelm, Herman Wilhelm; and three sisters, Margaret (James) Vogel, Clara (Donald) Guilford, and Coletta (Patrick) Clark.
Visitation for Madonna J. Wonderly will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2022, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, where the Rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, in St. Isidore Catholic Church, The Bend, with Father Melwin D’Souza officiating. Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Catholic Cemetery, The Bend.
