Margaret P. Alvaney, 90 years, of Bryan, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at The Inns and Villas at Fountain Park, where she was a resident. Margaret was born May 18, 1923 in Laurel, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Roderick and Lula (Locke) Pittman. Margaret was a 1940 graduate of George S. Gardner High School, Laurel, Mississippi. She married Allan J. Alvaney on January 23, 1945 in Laurel, Mississippi, and he preceded her in death on January 2, 2008. Margaret had worked as a Dental Assistant as well as working in the Accounts Payable Department at Chase Brass, General Tire and Oren Elliott Products. She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Bryan, where she was very active in her Sunday School Class and Bible Study Group. She was also a member of the Progress Club and the Bryan Hospital Auxiliary, where she was instrumental in starting the Baby Book Program. Margaret was very loved and looked after very well by the staff, nurses and aides who took care of her each and every day. The family wishes to thank each and every member of the staff at Fountain Park.
Surviving are her two daughters, Anita (Ted) Mathes of Bryan and Jannice “Jan” (Paul Johl) Alvaney of Centennial, Wyoming; two granddaughters, Tara (Chris) Spisak of Bryan and Tricia (Mike) Lyons of Bryan; six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Chloe and Cade Spisak and Caitlyn, Ashlee and Jacob Lyons; one sister, Sara (Bill) Smith of Zionsville, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Allan, one great-grandson, Cody Lyons, two brothers, Rod and Frank Pittman and three sisters, Lucille Ishee, Mary Palmer and Laura Nell Pearson.
Visitation for Margaret P. Alvaney will be held Sunday, January 19, 2014 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan where funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. Sunday with Pastor Barry Sweet officiating. Interment will follow in Shiffler Cemetery, Bryan.
