Martin L. “Marty” Sheets, 93 years, of Defiance, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2014 at his residence with his family at his side. Mr. Sheets was born May 3, 1921 in Adams Township, Defiance County, Ohio, the son of the late Frank and Anna (Siler) Sheets. An Army veteran of WWII, Martin served in the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater where he was wounded in 1945 and received a Purple Heart for his injuries. He married Lucille Kuhn on June 7, 1947 at St. Michael’s Ridge Catholic Church. Martin was a self employed farmer, and he also did Masonry work, roofing and construction. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Jewel American Legion Post 635, Sherwood VFW Post 5665 and the DAV Defiance Post 117.
In addition to his wife Lucille, Martin is survived by four children, Richard M. (Sue) Sheets of Defiance, LeRoy C. (Connie) Sheets of Defiance, Ruth Ann Bidlack of Defiance and Gene F. (Nancy) Sheets of Cecil; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Coletta Sheets of Defiance and Irene Zipfel, also of Defiance. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Richard J. Sheets, three brothers, Joe, Wesley and Paul Sheets and six sisters, Rosie Gladieux, Theresa Hoffman, Agnes VanDorn, Esther Batt, Donna Hesselchwardt and Mary Kuhn.
Visitation for Martin L. Sheets will be held Tuesday, September 30, 2014 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood where Scripture Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Funeral Home. Funeral Mass for Martin L. Sheets will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale, 06324 State Route 15, Defiance, Ohio 43512, with Father Robert Kill officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Sherwood VFW Post 5665. Visitation for Mr. Sheets will also be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
