Mary Jestine “Johnnie” Flightner, 93

Mary Jestine “Johnnie” Flightner, 93 years, of Bryan, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Genesis HealthCare-Bryan Center, where she had recently been a resident. Johnnie was born February 6, 1923 in Ohio City, Ohio, the daughter of the late William Bert and Pearl (Parker) Johnson. She was a 1941 graduate of Ohio City Liberty High School and a 1944 graduate of Fort Wayne Methodist School of Nursing. She married Robert F. Flightner on May 21, 1950 in Van Wert, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on June 5, 1989. Johnnie was a nurse her entire career, working at the former Cameron Hospital in Bryan from 1946 – 1950, and then she became an Industrial Nurse for the ARO Corp. from 1950 until her retirement on August 31, 1983. Johnnie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Bryan where she served as a Deacon and an Elder. She was also a Life Member of the Bryan Area Businesswomen, Progressive Study Club, Order of the Eastern Star Van Wert Chapter 48, and the Bryan American Legion Post 284. Johnnie also did volunteer work for the American Red Cross Nursing Service, taught Home Nursing Classes for the Red Cross as well as the Williams County Board of Health. She enjoyed doing needlework, reading, cooking and music and always kept a nice neat home.

Surviving are two nephews, Larry B. Johnson of Ohio City, Ohio and Terry B. (Patricia) Johnson of Van Wert, Ohio; four nieces, Barbara L. Johnson of Bryan, Roberta K. (Jeffery) Seebohm of Cincinnati, Ohio, Brenda L. Johnson of Hicksville and Mary Kay Moorhead of Bryan. She is also survived by several great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert; one sister, Ruth Johnson Spence; two brothers, James Parker Johnson and Boyd “Robert” Johnson; one niece, Suzanne Johnson.

Funeral services for Mary Jestine “Johnnie” Flightner will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, Bryan with Pastor Barry Sweet officiating. Interment will follow in Farmer Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the Bryan American Legion Post 284. Visitation for Johnnie will be held Friday, June 17, 2016 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
