Max D. Peter, 96

Max D. Peter, 96, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024, at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center, Defiance, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family.  Max was born January 27, 1928, in Hicksville, the son of Clyde and Alda (Headley) Peter.  He was a 1946 graduate of Hicksville High School.  Max was united in marriage to Barbara J. Koch on December 3, 1950.  He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hicksville, where he held various offices over the years.  Max was a life-long farmer, and a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service for 26 years.  He was on the Farmer Township Cemetery Board for 29 years.  Max proudly served his country in the United States Army from March 5, 1951, until his honorable discharge on January 28, 1957, achieving the rank of Sergeant.  He was a member of the Farmer American Legion Post 137, Sherwood VFW Post 5665, and the former Hicksville VFW Post 3011.   In retirement, Max enjoyed wintering in Florida, playing cards with family and friends, and golfing.

He is survived by his loving companion, Judy Cooper of Hicksville; three children, Bradford (Val) Peter of Hicksville, Chad (Tammy) Peter of Defiance, and Jeffrey (Deb) Peter of Hicksville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  Max was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife of 62 years, Barb Peter; two sisters, Katherine Lassus, Freda Brockelbank; two infant sisters; and a brother, Basil Peter.

Visitation for Max D. Peter will be held Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 2:00 – 7:00 P.M. at St. John Lutheran Church, 812 East High Street, Hicksville, Ohio 43526.  Funeral Services for Max will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the church with Minister Alex Heffelfinger officiating.  Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the start of the service on Thursday at the church.  Interment will follow in Lost Creek Cemetery, Farmer, Ohio, where military rites will be accorded by the combined honor guard from the Farmer American Legion Post 137, Hicksville American Legion Post 223 and Sherwood VFW Post 5665.
