Mercedes Jimenez, 92 years, of Bryan, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Genesis HealthCare – Bryan Center, where she was a resident. Mercedes was born October 22, 1921 in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of the late Hjinio and Margarita (Enriques) Gutierrez. She married Antonio “Tony” Jimenez on January 8, 1940 in Berne, Indiana, and he preceded her in death on September 12, 1991. Mercedes worked at Bryan Canning Factory was an assembler. She then worked in housekeeping at the Bryan Hospital. Mercedes deepest desire was spending time with her family. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking and was known for making her strawberry pies.
Surviving is her daughter, Elvira “Ellie” (Steven) Pryor of Defiance; four grandchildren, Cindy (James) Navarette of Boynton Beach, Florida, Julie Flores of Perrysburg, Ohio, Erica McGee of Williamsburg, Virginia and Jacqueline (Jermaine) Shelby of Middletown, Ohio; 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Antonio and four brothers, Ted, John, Joe and Demas Gutierrez.
Visitation for Mercedes Jimenez will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2013 in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013 in the funeral home with her nephew, Pastor Joe Gutierrez officiating. Interment will follow in Fountain Grove Cemetery, Bryan.
