Napoleon woman enters insanity plea in assault case

65 year old Frances Wilhlem of Napoleon who is facing charges of attempted murder and felonious assault pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in Putnam County Common Pleas Court. Wilhlem appeared for arraignment Wednesday and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges from an alleged incident that occurred on Sept. 5. She was said to have struck 84 year old Father Herman Scherger with a hammer several times outside of his Cloverdale home. Scherger was treated at St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care Center, Glandorf, while Wilhelm was transported to ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital for psychiatric observation. Wilhelm’s attorney filed a motion to determine her competency to stand trial. A pretrial date had not yet been set. He bond was continued.
