NEW POLICE DOGS

Two local county sheriff’s deputies graduated from K9 unit training Friday.

Defiance County Sheriff’s deputy Adam Shafer and Paulding County Sheriff’s deputy Gary Deitrick each completed the 14-week class in Fort Wayne. Shafer is the handler for Boomer, and Deitrick is the handler for Jano (pronounced Ya-no).

Both are German Shepherds from the Czech Republic.

Deitrick will be helping Paulding County renew its K9 program.

Shafer and Boomer’s graduation from training means that the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office is now adding a second K9 unit.

Deitrick has been a Paulding County deputy for 19 years, and Shafer has been a Defiance County deputy for more than six.
