Ohio Department of Education and Workforce officials are developing professional development courses in the literacy instructional approach known as the “science of reading” for educators to take once every five years. Under state law, this school year is the first in which Ohio’s 1.6 million students must learn by the science of reading, which emphasizes phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and word recognition. The science of reading replaces a long-popular instructional approach long known as three-cueing, in which students learn to read from visual cues and a text’s meaning.
