Ohio officials at the state and federal level are supporting extending Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that 1.4 million Ohioans depend on during the ongoing government shutdown. Due to the government shutdown, funding for SNAP is expected to run out Saturday and the program’s contingency fund cannot legally cover benefits without an appropriation. Ohio Sens. Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno are both supporting the Keep SNAP Funded Act. This bill would ensure full funding for the SNAP program during the government shutdown. Under the bill, Congress would appropriate the necessary funding to provide uninterrupted SNAP benefits, retroactive to the start of the shutdown.
