As families across Ohio gear up for Thanksgiving celebrations, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal is reminding residents to keep safety in mind, not just on Thursday, but throughout the holiday season. Thanksgiving remains the leading day for home cooking fires in the U.S. The National Fire Protection Association reports an estimated 1,446 home cooking fires occur annually on Thanksgiving, a 388% increase over the daily average. In Ohio last year, fire departments responded to more than 350 fires during the week of Thanksgiving, including 66 related to cooking. One major problem is leaving food unattended.
