Richard “Dick” M. Gordon, 79

Richard “Dick” M. Gordon died peacefully at the Community Health Professionals Hospice Inpatient Center in Defiance, Ohio, on June 24, 2024, with his family at his side.  Dick was born in Hicksville, Ohio on October 27, 1944, in the old Hicksville Hospital when it was located on Smith Street, to Guy and Georgia (Poth) Gordon.  The 1962 Boys Varsity Aces Basketball MVP graduated from Hicksville High School in 1962.  On December 21, 1963, he married Janet Darlene Massie in Grace United Methodist Church, Hicksville.  Dick obtained his Bachelor’s Degree of Education from Defiance College.  In 1971 he earned his Master’s Degree of Education from St. Francis University, Ft. Wayne.  After one year of teaching at Sherwood Elementary School, the rest of his teaching career was spent in Fort Wayne Community Schools, retiring in October of 1999.  After his retirement Dick operated and owned Gordon’s Saws and Sashes until 2023.  Once his teaching career ended and Janet retired they spent their winters in Avon Park, Florida, and summers at Hamilton Lake, Indiana.  Dick enjoyed reading, doing woodworking and other handy man projects and most of all fishing the lakes of Northeast Indiana and Central Florida.  He also enjoyed putting on fish frys for family, friends and neighbors.   He was a member of the FOE 2556 and a 50 year member of the Hicksville Masonic Lodge.
Dick is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Janet; daughters, Dr. Susan (Dr. Mark) Cruea of Findlay, Ohio, Cindy (Steve) Tollas, of Hicksville; and one son, John (Mary Ellen Rittenhouse) Gordon of Hicksville; seven grandchildren, Rachel Cruea, Connor Cruea, Scott Tollas, Lyndsey (Adam) Miller, Brett (Alexa) Tollas, Caitlin Gordon and Alexander Gordon; and the latest joy of his life, his first great grandchild, Harper Maeve Miller.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Georgia; and a sister, Evelyn Phillips.
Visitation for Dick will be held at Oberlin Turnbull Funeral Home, Hicksville, beginning at 4pm on Friday, June 28th.   A Masonic service will be held that evening at 7pm.  Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, June 29 at 11am, with visitation one hour before services.  Pastor Max Begley will be presiding.  Burial will be in Six Corners Cemetery, Hicksville.  Dick’s chosen charities are Tunnels to Towers Foundation; and Friends of the Library in care of the Johnson Memorial Library, Hicksville.
