Richard T. Shankster, 84, of Hillsdale, Michigan passed away on Saturday at his home with his family surrounding him. He was born on December 21, 1930 in Primrose, Ohio to Owen S. and E. Mildred (Moyer) Shankster. Dick graduated from Alvordton High School in 1948. He married Naomi Ruth Bashor and she preceded him in death on September 10, 1997.
Dick retired from GM in Defiance, The Foundry, in 1975, after 25 years. After his retirement, he was the sexton for 14 1/2 years at the village of Pioneer, Floral Grove Cemetery, a job that his father held before him.
He is survived by five sons, Randal (Cathy) Shankster of Milford, Indiana, John (Jenny) Shankster of Lansing, Michigan, Robert (Carol) Shankster of Defiance, Ohio, Russell (Cheryl) Shankster of Waldron, Michigan and Ron Shankster of Hillsdale, Michigan; three daughters, R. Elaine (Tony) Oulch of Hillsdale, Michigan, Linda (Gene) Hageman of Bryan, Ohio and Helen Elkins of Montpelier, Ohio; one sister Becky Clayton of Philippi, West Virginia; forty three grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Peggy Coler, one brother LaRue Shankster, one sister Emma Fae Kalder and one son-in-law Todd Elkins.
There will be a private graveside service for Dick at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Hillsdale County.
