Steuben County Sheriff’s Office warning public of a telephone scam.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a telephone scam. There have been several reports of telephone calls from someone claiming to be with the department. The caller states that money needs to be paid in order to resolve an arrest warrant. So far, it appears that registered sex offenders are mainly being targeted, but anyone could potentially be called. The scammer uses the fear of arrest to try and convince people to pay money, and there has been some financial loss already. These calls often originate outside of the United States and the money ultimately ends up going overseas. Because of this, the caller may have a foreign accent. Any questions?, call Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.
