Virginia Dare “Ginny” McDougall-Dickey, 85

Virginia Dare “Ginny” McDougall-Dickey, 85, of Cecil, Ohio, passed away Thursday, February 29, 2024, in Paulding, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family.  Ginny was born July 2, 1938, in Athol, Kentucky, daughter of the late Clayton and Verna E. (Callahan) Gross.  She attended Paulding High School, and married James E. McDougall on February 5, 1955, in Paulding, and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1989.  She then married Ernest A. Dickey on January 22, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he survives.  Ginny worked as a social worker for Defiance County Job and Family Services, retiring in 2005 after 20 years of service.  Prior to that, she worked at Dana Weatherhead, Paulding Progress Newspaper, and was the former owner of the Rusty Nail restaurant.  Ginny was a talented crafter, and more recently, creator of Ginny’s Wreaths & More.  She attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Defiance, Ohio, and was a member of the Sherwood VFW Post 5665, Defiance AmVets Post 1991 Ladies Auxiliary, 30 year member of the Bunco Girls Group, and a lifetime member of the Fairview Athletic Boosters.  In her younger years, Ginny enjoyed supporting her kids in their academic and sporting events, was a Girl and Cub Scout Troup Leader, and a Mat Maid Mother for Fairview Wrestling.  In more recent years, she enjoyed traveling with Ernie, and visiting casinos to play slot machines.

Ginny is survived by her husband, Ernie Dickey of Cecil, Ohio; four children, Dorinea “Rena” (Russ) Rager of Paulding, Michael McDougall of Defiance, Kevin (Loretta Mock) McDougall of Bryan, and Daphne (Graig) Sanderson of Sherwood, Ohio; three step-children, Tamara (Mike) Backhaus of Sherwood, Cindy (Jay Hostettler) Beilke of Defiance, and Lynn (Carole) Dickey of Perrysburg, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and six siblings, Dorothy Throne, Winston (Rita) Gross, Lowell (Teresa) Gross, Gar (Carol) Gross, Sally Gross, and Steve (Wanda) Gross.  She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, James; daughter, Deborah McDougall; granddaughter, Haley Duhamel; four brothers, Frank, William, Lawerance, and Ray; and two sisters, Christine and Sandy.

Visitation for Virginia Dare “Ginny” McDougall-Dickey will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2024, from 2:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, Ohio 43556.  Funeral services for Ginny will begin at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 413 East 2nd Street, Defiance, Ohio 43512 with Pastor Steve Heilshorn officiating.  There will be an additional hour of visitation on Wednesday at the church prior to the start of the funeral.  Interment will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Paulding.
