William E. Mavis, 75 years, of Alvordton, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2015, in his residence. William was born on September 27, 1939, to the late Robert A.J. and Irene Marie (Stahl) Mavis in Farmer, Ohio. He was a 1957 graduate of Farmer High School. William married Shirley L. Armbruster on April 25, 1964 in Columbus, Ohio, she preceded him in death on November 7, 2008. He worked as a shipping clerk for Bryan Metals for 37 years until his retirement in 2001. William was a member of the Farmer Church of Christ. He was a member of Williams County Gun Club, American Trap Shooters Association, and Williams County Conservation League. William ran the West Unity Sportsman Club (Windy Hill) for 15 years. He also served as the past president of Steel Workers Local 8219. William was the former Mayor of Alvordton, Village Marshall, and part of the Village Council. William was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting.
Surviving are his two sons, Larry (Jo Ellen) Mavis of Alvordton, Terry (Cathy) Mavis of Archbold; 5 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert L. (Fran) Mavis of Farmer; one sister, Mary Ann (John) Garver of Bryan. William was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Shirley, and his companion Pauline Alpaugh.
There will be no visitation and private family services will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan.
