Defiance chief of police to hang up his holster

Defiance’s police chief has been kicking around the idea for some time and finally decided it was time. Chief Tim Tobias submitted his letter of resignation to city administrator Jeff Leonard on Tuesday. He’s planning on his last day being August 2nd. The 53-year-old chief joined the Defiance police department in December 1984 as a patrolman. He was promoted to sergeant five years later and made assistant chief in October 1993. Tobias was promoted to Chief of Police in March 2008. He said he will miss the daily contact with the officers and members of his city family, and wants to do something else and seek a career with a little different pace. The civil service gave the city permission last week to ask candidates outside division ranks to apply for the position, along with members inside the department. If a replacement is not named before Tobias steps down, Assistant Chief Todd Shafer will become interim chief at that time.
