Larry “Shorty” A. Figgins, 86

Larry “Shorty” A. Figgins, 86, a lifelong Alvordton resident passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Parkview Bryan Hospital.  He was born on December 13, 1937 in Alvortdton to Devillo and Juanita (Severence) Figgins.  Larry graduated in the top ten percent of his class from Alvordton High School, a class which consisted of 10 graduates.  He married Carol Tobin in October 1956, and she preceded him in death.

Larry was a lifetime member of the Bryan Eagles, and a member of the Montpelier Eagles.  He spent 68 years with the Alvordton Fire Department, where he served as Chief.  Larry retired from the Ohio Turnpike in January 2001, where he worked in the Maintenance Department.  He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.  Larry was a die-hard Tigers Fan, and an Ohio State and Detroit Lions fan. He also worked as a fireman for the pit crew at Michigan Internation Speedway and was a huge NASCAR fan.

He is survived by his children Jody (Dan) Clark and Rodney “Rocky” (Kathy Dayhoff) Figgins; grandchildren Josh Nichols, David (Jess) Sharps, Kyle (Skylar) Clark, Bethany (Aaron) Repp and Carling (Steve) Belknap; seven great grandchildren; sisters Phyllis (Ron) Hesselschwardt and Karen Draper; and sister-in-law Joanne Whetro.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol, son Kevin Figgins, brothers Ralph, Bob, Ed, Pete and Ronnie Figgins, and sister Janet Borton.

Visitation for Larry will be on Wednesday, August 14th from 2-8pm at the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier.  Services will be on Thursday at 11am at the funeral home with Dr. Dan VanArsdalen to officiate.  Interment will follow at Pleasant View Union Cemetery in rural Fayette.  Memorial contributions may be given to the Alvordton Fire Department.
