Harmful algal bloom in western Lake Erie showing signs of decline.

The harmful algal bloom in western Lake Erie is showing signs of decline, but officials continue to warn that the water remains toxic and residents should exercise caution. According to a report released Tuesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the cyanobacteria bloom has shrunk to an area of approximately 300 square miles, a decrease since Aug. 31. The bloom currently stretches from Maumee Bay north to Stony Point, Michigan, and east to Port Clinton, with patches extending to the Lake Erie Islands.
