You’re asked to be on the lookout for an invasive insect that may be in the area. The spotted lanternfly is native to several east Asian countries but crossed into the U.S. in 2014 and into Ohio in 2021. The insect feeds on the sap of various plants, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, including grapevines. An area winery recently reported on Facebook it killed two lanternflies and spotted more at its vineyard in Holland, in Lucas County. Williams County is listed as having reported the spotted lanternfly, but it’s not confirmed. To identify, the best thing to do is attempt to catch it, put it in a bag or water bottle or whatever container you have handy and bring it in to be identified.
