A tornado that caused significant damage and cut off electricity to most of the downtown area was triggered by a thunderstorm that passed through Defiance early on Saturday afternoon. Around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning. Afterwards, the NWS concluded that the storm caused an EF1 tornado to hit Defiance, with an estimated maximum wind speed of 95 miles per hour. Although some houses and buildings were also damaged, the most of the damage was limited to trees. A few of the buildings sustained damage after being struck by falling trees.
