Victor Ramus, 90

Victor C. Ramus, 90 years, of Sherwood, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Victor was born November 17, 1923 in Jewell, Ohio, the son of the late Edward C. and Helen (Steinberger) Ramus.  He was a 1941 graduate of Jewell High School.  An Army veteran of WWII, Victor served in the European Theater of Operations.  He married Pauline A. Konesky on May 10, 1947 in Gibsonburg, Ohio.  Victor began his working career as a mechanic, working for Steven’s Automotive and Derrow Pontiac.  He later served as Postmaster of the Sherwood Post Office as well as serving as Chief of Police for the Village of Sherwood.  Victor also served as an Associate Deputy for the Defiance County Sheriff’s Department for over 35 years.  He is a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Delaware Bend as well as the Holy Name Society.  He was a member of the Defiance County Sheriff’s Department, Ottawa River Beagle Club, Defiance County Fish and Game Club, Sherwood Volunteer Fire Department, Sherwood VFW Post 5665, the Defiance DAV, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1164, National League of Postmasters and the National Association of Postmasters.  Victor loved to be outdoors, hunting, fishing and training Beagles.

Surviving is his wife, Pauline of Fort Wayne; four children, Vicki (Leon) Smith of Archbold, Nancy (Steven) Hale of Sherwood, Tom (Eileen) Ramus of New Bavaria and Charles (Darlene) Ramus of Spencerville, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Jeremy (Olivia) Smith of West Chester, Ohio, John (Kara) Hellemn of Lima, Ohio, Matthew (Jamie) Hellemn of Sherwood, Michelle Ramus of Spencerville, Indiana, Megan (Wes) Burcham of Indianapolis, Indiana, Eric Ramus and Chad Ramus both of Spencerville, Indiana, three step grandchildren, John Eldridge of Defiance, Josh (Katelyn) Eldridge of Defiance and Anne Eldridge of Fort Wayne; six great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann (Kenneth) Kryling of Malinta, Ohio.  He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Jason Smith and Timmy Smith, son-in-law, Galen Hellemn and one brother, Donald Ramus.

Visitation for Victor C. Ramus will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, where the Sherwood Fire Department and the Defiance County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a Walk-Thru at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.  Funeral Mass for Victor C. Ramus will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Isidore Catholic Church, Delaware Bend with Father Robert Holden officiating.  Interment will follow in the St. Isidore Catholic Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Sherwood VFW Post 5665.
