An FBI agent was the featured speaker at the Defiance’s Rotary meeting on Monday.
Agent Dave Dustin — based in the FBI’s Toledo office — spoke for about 15 minutes at the weekly luncheon.
Dustin said agents locally focus primarily on duties such as combating child prostitution, child pornography and gang activities.
Specifically, Dustin detailed efforts of an FBI task force to combat crimes related to child prostitution and child pornography. The task force was formed in the last decade due to a problem that centered around a huge truck stop in Harrisburg, Pa.
According to Dustin, an investigation revealed that 18–20 pimps connected to child prostitution there were from Toledo, while 70 of the 100 juveniles involved were from northwest Ohio, mostly the Toledo area.
The task force also worked with the Ohio General Assembly on Senate Bill 235, he indicated, to address human trafficking in Ohio.
Dustin told Rotarians that when he came to the FBI in the early 1990s, the agency was looking for lawyers — of which he is one — and accountants. Now, he said, computer scientists and engineers are more in demand.
