On Tuesday night, at the regular meeting of Defiance City Council, councilmembers learned about an innovative traffic control device that is being proposed for one Defiance intersection. A roundabout was proposed by a consulting firm. Now, the mayor plans to ask council to approve an application for an Ohio Department of Transportation grant that would provide most of the funding for a single lane roundabout at Ottawa and Cleveland avenues. The estimated cost, according to Mayor Bob Armstrong, is $1.339 million, with the ODOT grant providing 90 percent, leaving the city’s share at $133,900. A study by ODOT shows 21 vehicle crashes occurred at that intersection between 2012–2014. So far this year alone, another seven crashes have occurred there.
